The annual club quiz on Saturday 25th March in aid of the RNLI kicked off the start of the clubs 2017 season. 6 teams battled it out in a great contest.

Congratulations to the winners.. team name: ‘Neighbours’ – Paddy, Amanda, Sharon & Seamus with quiz-masters Stephen & Siobhan.

There were several rounds with a good selection of questions ranging from.. “What was Mexico’s boarder length with America?” A 4 answer multi-choice question! For those in the know the correct answer was 1,951 miles!

Another multi-choice question was “What was the circumference of the moon?” If you are curious then the answer was 10,921 km.

Following with tradition, there were the usual and very challenging picture rounds, one of which was to identify ‘Famous Cats’ and the other ‘Famous spaceships” ……….Buck Rogers @ no 2, The Invaders at no 6 and Flight of the Navigator @ no 10 and cats’ No 15 Cheetara from ‘Thundercats’ were all to prove tricky, but were a deciding factor for the eventual winners Neighbours who’s knowledge of these 2 rounds ultimately gave them victory. They were run close by last years winners Fingal flyers who finished 2nd, so well played to them.

Monies raised for the RNLI including New years day, set a new record total of €600……Well done everyone.

They have done a great job in recent years and will be handing over the quiz-master reigns to Paddy & Amanda who will be your quiz-masters for 2018.

Christmas Walk 2016

Our annual Christmas walk took place on Thursday 29th December. Over thirty of us assembled at Killakee car park just south of the Hell Fire Club in dull but pleasant weather. From there we moved off at 11.00 to our starting point on the Featherbeds.

As it is our custom we try to stay within the Dublin county border. The route selected this year were old bog trails used to remove turf in years gone by. The location was just west of Glencree in the Dodder River valley.

Conditions along the tracks were muddy and wet until we linked up with the Barneskala Track which cuts through the bog. This we followed south to the end where we stopped for lunch
From there we turned back and criss crossed tracks to our starting point. The area is really wild and peaceful despite it being only two or three miles from the capital. We were all back to our cars by 2.00pm, where we all retired to the Scholars Town inn for refreshments.
Our thanks to Brendan Peavoy who put it all together.

S.S.B.C. Mourne Walking Weekend 2016.

The Club held its 5thwalking weekend, based at the Tollymore National Outdoor Centre. We had 40 participants lead by Peter Smyth, Michael Madigan and Donal Dwyer.

The mountain walk started at Bloody Bridge up to the Mourne Wall there the group split with a large number climbing Slieve Donard (Ulster’s highest mountain 853m). Both groups then continued on to the Castles and through Hares Gap and back to the Hostel via the Trassey Track and finally through Tollymore Forest just in time for the Irish /English rugby match.

Peter lead his group for a three and a half hour walk around the boundary of the forest park.

After the match we all got together for dinner and a few drinks ( a few to many for some !!!) Singing provided by Ann O’Connor and her Hot Gossip backing group, Peter entertained us with his singing and guitar playing. , Aideen, one of our visitors gave us two great numbers and last but not least Paul provided D.J. / Lighting Engineer services until 4 a.m.

Sunday was a fabulous day ,maybe too bright for many of us . Some were a bit concerned when we ran into a team from the Game of Thrones in full costume and fully armed as we exited the Hostel.

The Hostel provided a great breakfast, which set us up for the day. 19 walkers set out at 10.30 and did the Spinkwee Walk. (approx. 3 hrs)

Unfortunately Robert Murphy had the man flu and was sorely missed by his herd of Mountain Goats.

A special thanks to the staff of the Tollymore Hostel for taking great care of us again.

Don’t forget to book early for 2017.

The 2015 Christmas walk was held on Tuesday 29th Dec 2015. This year we continued our traditional practice in following sections of the Dublin Way for our annual Christmas Walk. Twenty seven of us gathered on the Tuesday after Christmas at Killakee carpark, departure was scheduled for 11.30. The day was overcast with a light wind. A major storm was forecast to come in later in the day but we had a gap of about three hours to complete our trek.

From the car park we followed the road around to the entrance of Cruagh wood. There we took the trail eastward until we reached open ground on Cruagh Mountain. Then up onto the mountain; the track we followed was more of a stream with continuous pools with flowing water, there had been a lot of rain the previous night. The higher we got the wind in our faces increased to about 40 knts. At the top of the mountain we picked up another wider track, again very wet which took us across Killakee Mountain to the Feather Bed road (Military Rd). We followed the road northwards and at the next junction veered left towards Piperstown. Bohernabreena lakes were below us to our left. The wind coming off Kippure was getting stronger all the time. After about half a Km we turned right into the wood and took a lunch break sheltering behind stacks of large logs. Heading eastward we followed a raised track through a felled wood and back onto the Featherbed road which brought us quickly back to the car park. It took us just less than three hours and we covered 8.5 Km. A good walk in varied terrain with mixed conditions.

Our thanks to Brendan Peavoy & Seamus Greene for organising.

The GP14s kicked off the season with the Riocard O’Tiarnaigh Challenge sailed at Swords Sailing Club on the weekend of the 18th and 19th of April. A total of 20 boats turned up to compete for the championship which was run in individual fleets Gold, Silver and Bronze over the Saturday and Sunday. The top four in each fleet qualify for the final three race sail-off to determine the overall winner on the Sunday afternoon.

With a steady 13 knot breeze the bronze fleet were first to take to the water and the young Gallagher brothers Gareth and Richard showed early form to lead the first race from start to finish. In the silver fleet it was Simon Cully paired with his old crew Richard Street who took line honours while in the Gold fleet it was the Tim Corcoran and Brendan Brogan, back after a year’s sabbatical who showed the early form and took the first race.

As the day progressed it was the young Gallagher brothers from Culmore who dominated the bronze fleet winning all but one of the six races on the Saturday. It was young Peter Boyle crewed by the auld fellow Stephen who won the last race of the day to hold second place overnight in the bronze fleet. Third place overnight was Adrian Lee and Edward Coyne from Youghal. Adrian and Edward sailed a consistent series finishing either second or third in each of the six races.

The silver fleet was hotly contested with Simon and Richard taking three of the six races but two DNS meant they were relegated to third overnight. Colman Grimes and David Lappin took two of the six races and were the overnight leaders in the silver fleet. Bill and James Johnson won one of the six races and finished the day in second place.

Despite Tim and Brendan’s early showing it was Niall Henry and Ossin Geraghty who dominated the first day in the Gold fleet taking two of the first six and finishing second in three of the others. Shane MacCarthy and Damian Bracken finished the day in a creditable second place taking one of the six races and finishing second and third in the rest. The Mc Guinness brothers held third place overnight with consistent top four finishes.

On Sunday morning there was still three races to sail in the qualification series and qualification open to almost all the fleet. The Gallagher brothers, who after their strong showing on the Saturday had already qualified for the final didn’t need to sail but decided to go out and get a feel for the course in preparation for the final. They sailed the first race and then came ashore to rest while the other battled it out for the remaining qualification spots. Peter and Stephen Boyle, Adrian and Edward from Youghal and Michael Collender with Brian Walker from Mullingar took the other qualification spots for the final. In the silver fleet it was Colman and David, Simon and Richard, Bill and James with Gerry Gilligan and Lucia Nicholson who qualified for the silver fleet. In the gold fleet the qualification places went to Niall and Ossian, Shane and Damian, John and Donal with Tim and Brendan taking the final spot.

The first race in the final saw Simon and Richard a little to eager to start and earned a black flag for their troubles. Niall and Ossian lead at the weather mark and held it all the way to the finish. Shane and Damian were second with Tim and Brendan third. Race two saw a reversal in the top two positions with Shane and Damian taking the first place and Niall and Ossian taking second. With double points for the last race, the overall result would depend on which of the two inform teams could come out on top. In the end it was Shane and Damian who won the race and the championship with Niall and Ossian finishing second overall with the McGuinness brothers taking the last of the podium positions. Colman and David took the top honours in the silver fleet while Adrian and Edward were the overall winners in the bronze fleet.
